Conversion Practices Draft Bill
We are a grassroots group working to prevent the dangerous Conversion Practices Draft Bill becoming law. We have listed below links to other organisations who are also concerned to view their objections.

STATEMENT OF CONCERNS
We are parents, teachers, safeguarding professionals, feminists, lesbian, gay and bisexual, detransitioners, lawyers, researchers, therapists and clinicians. We unequivocally oppose coercion, abuse, and fraudulent attempts to change anyone’s sexual orientation or sex.
This draft Conversion Practices Bill would do the opposite of what it claims. It weaponises the real history of conversion practices against same-sex attracted people in order to shield and advance the modern conversion of gender-confused children and adults into medicalised transgender pathways.Legislation that cannot distinguish between abuse and ethical care, free speech, or parental responsibility is not protection — it is ideological capture of the criminal law.The Bill is legally reckless.Coercion, abuse and fraud are already crimes. Section 1(2)’s sweeping reference to “any conduct” risks criminalising ordinary conversation, parental guidance, teaching and clinical exploration. There is no statutory defence of reasonableness. The Bill would introduce the nebulous, scientifically unsupported categories of “non-binary” and “gender-fluid” into statute. The result will be a chilling effect, unnecessary criminal investigations, and a surge in family-court disputes — all at a time of national financial strain. It endangers child safeguarding and exploratory therapy.Parents must be able to question, challenge and guide their children without fear of investigation. The Bill shows none of the respect for parental responsibility or reasonable behaviour that exists in existing coercive-control law. Grandparents, teachers and social workers will self-censor. Children could even face consequences for refusing to affirm an adult’s belief.Legitimate exploratory therapy is not conversion. Clinicians must be free to help patients examine complex feelings without predetermined outcomes. The Bill ignores child development, desistance rates, and the adult duty to protect children from irreversible harm. Fear of prosecution will drive cautious professionals out of this work, leaving vulnerable people without support. It is homophobic in effect.A high proportion of those identifying as transgender are same-sex attracted. Social transition is an active intervention that locks many young lesbians and gay boys onto a medical pathway of infertility, sexual dysfunction and lifelong health risks. Helping a same-sex attracted young person accept their orientation risks being treated as a crime. This is conversion practice by another name.It silences women, academics and dissenters.Women must remain free to name biological sex and defend sex-based rights. Academics and teachers must remain free to pursue evidence and follow safeguarding guidance. The Bill treats contested belief as settled fact and places those who dissent at legal risk. Detransitioners — already often isolated and traumatised — will find it even harder to obtain honest support.A law that cannot separate coercion from care, or ideology from reality, will harm the people it claims to protect while eroding liberty, professional judgement and parental authority.

GROUPS

Biology in Medicine
We are a group of doctors and colleagues wanting patients to be treated according to their sex, and to know the sex of those caring for them. We are particularly concerned about the harms of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones to the normal healthy bodies of children and young adults. This proposed conversion bill is a charter to full and unquestioning adoption of harmful and irreversible medical and surgical interventions in children and young adults effectively banning thoughtful exploratory therapy, and silencing parental concerns and guidance.

Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender (CAN-SG)We are a network of clinicians, including therapists, who are concerned about safe, ethical, evidence-based care for people who have distress in relation to their sex.We have campaigned against previous attempts to bring in a conversion practices ban because of the risk of a chilling effect on the ability of therapists to provide exploratory therapy to children and adults who are experiencing gender-related distress, or to support their families. In particular, we are concerned about the risks to young people who would otherwise grow up to be gay or lesbian of undergoing “transition”, including permanent body-modifying interventions, in order to conform to society’s expectations of male or female.Visit CAN-SG

Detransition Pathway UK (DPUK)We are a network dedicated to providing support for individuals who have detransitioned, are thinking about detransitioning, or are questioning their current path in life in regard to gender identity. We are vehemently against the introduction of the conversion therapy bill as this affects detransitioners directly. The government has shown they do not care about detransitioners, as this bill will act to silence those directly harmed who want to speak out publicly. It will also limit access to the resources they need, such as exploring therapy options. We stand united with others against this and will exhaustively campaign against this bill.Visit Detransition Pathway UK

Evidence-Based Social Work AllianceChampioning Informed DialogueAs a coalition of qualified practitioners, academics and social work students, we came together in response to our individual concerns regarding the uncritical use of gender identity theory in social work and other professions. As a group, we believe social workers have a responsibility in law, underpinned by professional ethics and values, to promote and uphold the safeguarding of children. Gender-questioning or confused children and young people are presenting to the profession, and we are being silenced in our attempts to understand and discuss evidence-based approaches to exploring this phenomenon.Visit Evidence-Based Social Work Alliance

GenspectGenspect raises serious concerns about Labour’s proposed Conversion Practices Bill, warning that it could restrict therapists’ ability to explore gender-related distress openly and could criminalise legitimate therapeutic conversations. It argues that existing laws already prohibit abusive, violent and coercive practices, and calls for robust opposition to the proposed legislation.Visit Genspect

HumanGayMaleAdvocating for gay men on the basis of biological sex and same-sex attraction. We exist to rebuild and protect gay male community, and to ensure that the biological sex-based reality of homosexuality is clearly understood, respected and defended. We oppose this draft Bill not least because it treats transgender identity as equivalent to sexual orientation, when the concept of gender identity fundamentally erases the sex-based reality of sexual orientation. The Bill provides no evidence that new legislation is required and no clear definition of “conversion practices”. Its healthcare exemption would also risk putting children who might otherwise grow up to be gay onto a transgender pathway, while defining that pathway as “healthcare”.Visit HumanGayMale

LGB AllianceMany young people who identify as transgender are same-sex attracted. Some are struggling with puberty, their developing sexuality or the pressure to conform to stereotypes about how boys and girls should behave. They need time, careful exploration and adults who are free to talk honestly with them. The Bill could place those conversations under legal suspicion. Parents and professionals could fear complaints, investigations and even criminal penalties for questioning whether a young person has been born in the wrong body.It could also silence lesbian, gay and bisexual detransitioners who want to speak openly about what happened to them.We will not stand by while gay children are converted by stealth.Visit LGB Alliance

LGB Christians
We are LGB Christians, a network of lesbian, gay and bi Christians and our friends. LGB Christians will defend the rights of same-sex attracted people in the face of increasing backlash, confusion, and risks caused by ideas which replace the biological reality of the two sexes with self defined, gender identities. We are ecumenical and non-party political.

Lesbian FightbackLesbians continue to face discrimination throughout society. Therefore, we declare that:Lesbians are women who are attracted to and love other women. They are female homosexuals, which means they are same-sex attracted.Men cannot be lesbians because men cannot be women and boys cannot be girls. Many tomboys will grow up to be lesbian. Rejecting femininity is a common lesbian choice; it does not mean that girls or women are trying to be, or are, male.Lesbians have the right to create and maintain their own spaces, free from male interference, for social, cultural, educational, and political activities.Lesbians have the right to discuss matters which affect them without being abused, harassed or intimidated.Lesbians have the right to exist as an independent group and not be teamed with any other group with different needs.Support lesbians, NOT lesbian erasure.Visit Lesbian Fightback

LabourLGBLabourLGB is a coalition of lesbian, gay and bisexual Labour Party members campaigning for LGB rights. As Labour insiders, activists on behalf of the Party and within our communities, our role is to influence government thinking to take account of the unique needs and rights of LGB same-sex attracted people, as distinct from those with other protected characteristics.Visit LabourLGB

Lesbian LabourLesbian Labour is a channel for the voices of lesbians in the Labour Party. We are same-sex attracted women and our sex and sexual orientation are protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. Women's Declaration InternationalThis Declaration reaffirms the sex-based rights of women which are set out in the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 18 December 1979 (CEDAW).It has been signed by over 40K people and nearly 600 organisations.Article 4 is about freedom of opinion and expression and states that women have the right to hold opinions without interference. This should include the right to hold and express opinions about ‘gender identity’ without being subject to harassment, prosecution or punishment. We oppose the bill because it will undermine our freedom of expression.Visit Women's Declaration International
